Our New Addition

Did I get you there with that post title?

Were you expecting to see more bump pics?

This kind of addition is quite a bit different;)

If you have followed me long enough you know that we live in a 2 bedroom house with our 5 children.  It is  774 sq. ft., has one bathroom and a very tiny kitchen.

God has taught me so much about being content and making the most with what we have, though I haven't always liked it.

We bought our house at the peak of the market...and then it crashed and we have really had no way out, unless we wanted to go into debt.

Our cute little house was everything I had dreamed of when we bought it: wood floors, big backyard, close to family and church, big oak trees.

At the time we bought it, we only had Israel and I was pregnant with Judah.  It was just the right size for our little family.

Little did we know how our family would grow over the coming years...

Though we never imagined that we would be living here with 5 children(almost 6!) we have been so blessed and thankful for all the joy and love that we have experienced in this little home. Love really does grow best in little houses.

We have prayed for a long time for God to provide a way for us to either add on or get a new place. Though of course we would have liked it to have happened a lot sooner, God has deemed it best to make us wait. God's timing is always perfect though and we are so excited to finally be adding on!

I haven't always been the most patient person. I really don't like waiting, but God obviously is doing a work in me. Even though I don't always understand I am thankful for it and I trust him.

With a new baby due in December I am quite anxious for our addition to be finished. I am praying that by some miracle that it will be done in time but if not I know we will survive. At least the baby won't care.

We are going to be adding 14ft on to the back of the house. (About 400 sq.ft.)It will include a new, bigger kitchen, tearing down the wall between our living room and kitchen now to make an open dining area, a new bedroom and a bathroom! Plus a deck off the back with french doors opening out from our kitchen and bedroom!! To most standards it will still be a modest size house but for us it will be amazing!!!

My husband, a ministry of our church and other hired help will be doing most of the work. I am so thankful that I have such a handy husband(who has done construction work before) and some amazing servants in our church to take on this project.

I am really excited that the kids get to be apart of this. I am hoping they will learn a lot about hard work as well as some valuable life skills.

So far the footers and stem wall have been finished and our first inspection passed. Already I have learned that building a house is no joke and requires a lot of patience. We were supposed to have started in July, but due to waiting on our plans, city permits and other things it is just now getting started. I was starting to think it would never happen!

I know that there is bound to be plenty of more setbacks and changes so I am asking God for grace to help me roll with the punches and just be thankful that we are doing this at all!

I am preparing myself for a lot of dust, dirt and mess. Thankfully I have not gotten into my nesting mode or I would probably be driving myself and everyone else crazy!!

I wish it was like a home renovation show where you get to see what happens in fast motion but real life is not like that and I just pray that God will help me to stay faithful with what he has given us to do right now, one day at a time.

I can't wait to show you our progress and walk you through our renovation! So now not only do you have to put up with our newest baby addition updates but our home addition updates also;) Be sure to check out my instagram and instagram stories for behind the scenes progress!

Have you done a home renovation or addition?

What was your experience?

Any advice?

  1. This is so exciting!!! God is so kind. I think of the verses saying how, if earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, then how much more our Heavenly Father does. What a good, and very timely, gift! Oh, and I love your back garden. It looks like a tropical version of The Secret Garden :)

    1. Yes, He is such a good Father and knows what we need, when we need it:) Thanks, it a big mess right now. I'm looking forward to starting a new garden when we are finished and landscaping the rest of the back yard!

  2. Yay!!! This is awesome and I admire you for choosing contentment right where God has you. It's something I struggle with! Plus I think it's awesome your family of 7 (almost 8) lives in a smaller home. We have a "small"house (according to our neighbors) but it is just right for us. When I stop myself from comparing to our neighbors, there is so much joy in what the Lord has given us!

    1. Believe me it hasn't always been easy but I am so thankful for the lessons I have learned and continue to! Yes, I agree! As soon as we fix our eyes on him and off of everyone else we can have such peace and joy in what he has given us!
