The Ultimate Summer Reading List for Boys
The first chapter book I read by myself was Little House in the Big Woods. After that, I was hooked. You could always find me hidden away somewhere with my face in a book and my mind in another time and place. Now that my boys can read chapter books all my fond memories with books are coming back to me. I still love reading but have to be very intentional if I want to soak in a new book. This summer I really want the boys to gain a love for reading. Of course I know this can't be forced but I am going to try to at least push them in the right direction.
In the meantime it has proven cheaper for us to buy our own books and I want to create our own library anyway. I have found a lot of great classics at garage sales and thrift stores but when I am looking for something specific amazon prime is a life saver; especially with 1-2 day free shipping.
The boys and I went online to find them a good book to read that they have an interest in. Judah is obsessed with animals but it was hard to find him a chapter reading book about animals.
But we found this amazing Encyclopedia of Animals
that has tons of great pictures, drawings and facts. The kids have already been pouring over it and I know they will spend many more hours looking at the pictures and learning about animals...and reading!
I have been reading the Little House books
to the boys and Judah has really taken to them so he is also going to be reading Farmer Boy 
this summer. I have found him a couple of times reading it on his own, without me even asking him!
I have convinced Israel that he will love The Narnia series
. I still have my set that I will pass on to him. Most of the covers are falling apart and the pages are all earmarked from my constant reading. I must have read them 3 or 4 times.
I love how reading opens your mind to new ideas and takes you on adventures to new places and worlds without even leaving the safety of your home. Here are some great classic and not so classic books that we are planning to add to our library. I am excited to get these books in my boys hands and see their imagination grow. Of course I'm sure girls would love these books too but since only my boys can read right now I am making this list for them. I hope this list will help you stir up an excitement and love of reading and in your boys also!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun list! I loved reading The Boxcar Children, Roald Dahl books and so many other chapter books to my students. My daughter just turned two so I can't wait to introduce her to the classics in a few years. My students always seemed to enjoy The Magic Tree House books and Clementine. DeleteOne January we lost a library book which I ended up having to pay for. We found it the following December, in the box with all the Christmas books :-( My boy is reading Guns of the Lion from the Faith and Freedom trilogy by Douglas Bond, (he is 13), and is really enjoying it. Thank you for sharing your list!
